Mahjong developed in nineteenth-century China and became an international phenomenon in the early twentieth century. By the 1920s, the clicking of mahjong tiles could be heard in homes and gathering places across the United States. Chinese American communities embraced the game as a space for connection and shared cultural experience, while mahjong simultaneously crossed boundaries of race, class and geography during the great American mahjong craze.
That moment coincided with another extraordinary chapter in American history.
Across Black America, particularly during the New Negro and Harlem Renaissance era, Black women were creating clubs, literary societies and civic organizations that provided spaces for fellowship, intellectual exchange, philanthropy and leisure. Organizations flourished in cities across the country, creating their own traditions and their own tables.
